How to Remove Activation Lock From an Apple Watch Before Selling

The right way to prepare an Apple Watch isn't to erase the Watch directly — that often leaves Activation Lock in place. Unpairing from the paired iPhone, signed in to the legitimate owner's Apple Account, is what actually clears the lock.

Short answer. The safest normal method is to unpair the Apple Watch from its paired iPhone using the legitimate owner's Apple Account credentials. This erases the Watch and removes Activation Lock. Erasing the Watch without correctly unpairing it may leave Activation Lock enabled.

What Apple Watch Activation Lock is

Activation Lock on Apple Watch is the same family of protection as Activation Lock on iPhone — it ties the Watch to the owner's Apple Account through Find My. When the legitimate owner unpairs correctly, Find My releases the Watch and the lock comes off. If a new owner reaches the setup screen and sees a prompt asking for the previous Apple Account email and password, Activation Lock is still in place.

    How Find My enables it

Activation Lock turns on automatically whenever Find My is enabled on the Watch (which happens during normal pairing with an iPhone signed in to an Apple Account). There's no separate switch — Find My is the switch.

Why a new owner can't complete setup while it's active

Setup checks Apple's servers against the Watch's identifier. While Activation Lock is in place, setup requires the original Apple Account's email and password — there is no fallback. Resetting from the Watch directly doesn't help: the lock is keyed to the account, not to the data on the Watch.

    Preparation — the right order

    1. Back up through the paired iPhone

    • When you unpair from the iPhone, the Watch backs up automatically — but make sure the iPhone itself is also backed up (iCloud or computer) so the Watch backup is preserved
    • If you're moving to a new iPhone, restore that one from backup first, then re-pair the Watch from the restored backup

    2. Unpair from the Watch app on iPhone

    • Open the Watch app on the paired iPhone
    • Tap All Watches (top left) → tap the (i) next to your Watch
    • Tap Unpair Apple Watch and confirm
    • On cellular models you'll be asked whether to keep or remove the mobile data plan
    • Enter the Apple Account password when prompted — this is the step that removes Activation Lock

    3. Mobile data plan (cellular models only)

    • Choose Remove plan if you're selling the Watch and don't intend to add it to another Watch on the same account
    • Choose Keep plan if you're swapping to a new Apple Watch and want to keep the same number
    • Contact your network if you're unsure — some networks bill the Watch line separately and may need to clear the eSIM their side

    4. What happens when the Watch is erased directly

Settings → General → Reset → Erase All Content and Settings on the Watch wipes the data, but if you haven't unpaired through the iPhone and authenticated against the Apple Account, Activation Lock stays on. The next owner reaches setup and is blocked.

If the paired iPhone is unavailable

    • Sign in to iCloud.com → Find Devices with the Apple Account that owns the Watch
    • Select the Watch and choose Erase This Device, then once erased, Remove from Account
    • This achieves the same end-state: Watch erased and removed from the account, with Activation Lock cleared

    Confirming removal

    • Check the Watch is no longer listed at iCloud.com → Find Devices
    • Power the Watch on — it should boot to the language / pairing setup screen with no Apple Account prompt
    • If the setup screen asks for the previous owner's Apple Account email and password, Activation Lock is still active — repeat the unpair step

    Edge cases

    Forgotten Apple Account credentials

Use Apple's official account recovery at iforgot.apple.com. Recovery can take days. There is no shortcut at a counter and no legitimate third-party bypass.

    Family Setup watches

Watches set up through Family Setup are managed by a family organiser's iPhone. Unpairing must be done by that organiser through the Watch app on their iPhone.

Watches owned by a business, school or organisation

Watches enrolled in Mobile Device Management or an Apple Business / School Manager account need the original organisation to release them. Until that happens, the Watch may behave as Activation Locked on setup.

    Lost Mode

If the Watch is in Lost Mode (turned on by the legitimate owner through Find My), only the owner can clear it by signing in to their Apple Account and removing Lost Mode. Staff cannot.

Why staff cannot bypass Activation Lock

Our specialists can guide the verified owner through the official unpairing and account-removal process. Customers must enter their own passwords and security codes. PhonesForCash cannot bypass Apple Account security, Activation Lock, Lost Mode, Stolen Device Protection or ownership safeguards. Any service claiming otherwise should be treated with suspicion.

Why Activation Lock affects resale value

    • A locked Watch cannot normally be prepared for a new owner — its reuse value collapses
    • It limits resale to specialist or parts buyers
    • An erased screen is not proof that Activation Lock has been removed
    • Correct unpairing significantly improves buyer confidence and the achievable price
    • Account removal does not replace physical testing, serial checks or proof of ownership

Before visiting a counter — checklist

    • ☐ Bring the paired iPhone where possible
    • ☐ Know the Apple Account credentials
    • ☐ Confirm the Watch can charge and switch on
    • ☐ Check the exact case size (mm) and model (Series number, SE, Ultra)
    • ☐ Bring the charger and any straps where available
    • ☐ Allow time for authentication or account recovery if there's any doubt
    • Do not erase the Watch before confirming Activation Lock can be removed

    Common questions

Can I just reset the Watch from Settings before selling?

Resetting from Settings on the Watch wipes the data but doesn't clear Activation Lock if you haven't unpaired through the iPhone and authenticated with your Apple Account. Use the Watch app on the paired iPhone instead.

I've already erased it — can the lock still be removed?

Yes, in most cases. Sign in to iCloud.com → Find Devices with the same Apple Account that owned the Watch and choose Remove from Account. The Watch will then boot to a clean setup screen.

Do you accept Activation Locked Apple Watches?

An Apple Watch cannot normally be purchased as a reusable device while Activation Lock remains enabled. The legitimate owner must remove the Watch from their Apple Account through official Apple methods (Watch app on the paired iPhone, or iCloud.com → Find Devices). We can guide a verified owner through it but cannot bypass Apple security.

    What about the cellular plan?

When you unpair, you'll be asked whether to keep or remove the plan. If you're selling rather than upgrading, choose Remove. If your network bills separately, also call them to confirm the line is closed.
