Should You Repair or Sell a Damaged Phone?

The simple rule: if the repair costs more than the difference between the broken and working resale value, sell as-is. Here's how that applies to the faults we see most often. General guidance only — bring the device in for a confirmed assessment.

This guide reflects practical device identification, inspection and resale considerations used by our buying team when assessing phones and other devices. It is general guidance, not a confirmed valuation.

Three numbers decide it: (A) repair cost, (B) resale value working, (C) resale value broken. If A > (B − C), sell broken.

    Screen damage

On modern flagships the display is the most expensive single repair — the glass and OLED panel are bonded into a full assembly. On a Pro Max or Ultra, official-channel repair can approach the resale value of the working device. On older or mid-range phones the maths is sometimes the other way. Bring it in and we'll explain both sides.

    Battery replacement

Battery replacement is usually one of the more cost-effective repairs because the part itself is inexpensive — though on glued back-glass models the labour matters. A phone with a battery service warning still has strong resale value because the next owner can budget for the swap. See why battery health affects value.

    Back-glass damage

Cracked back glass looks dramatic but is usually a smaller deduction than people fear — refurbishers replace it routinely. On models where the back panel is glued and the cameras must come out (most modern iPhones, recent Galaxies) the repair is more involved but still well below screen-repair cost.

    Camera faults

Failed autofocus, dust under the lens, or a cracked rear lens cover are common. A faulty ultra-wide or telephoto on a Pro model is a real deduction — but most refurbishers carry compatible modules, so the broken-vs-working gap is usually less than a full-assembly screen swap.

    Water damage

Water damage is the most unpredictable category. A phone that survived a brief splash and dried out may test as fully working — sells normally. A phone with triggered moisture indicators, corrosion or intermittent faults sells for parts value, because reliable long-term function can't be guaranteed. We're honest about which scenario we're seeing.

    Foldable-device repairs

Foldable inner displays, hinges and protective layers are the most expensive repair category on the consumer market. On a Z Fold or Z Flip, the inner-screen replacement can be a high percentage of the device's working value. Foldables with hinge failure, screen-protector lifting or crease worsening often make more sense to sell than repair — see why foldables depreciate faster.

    Genuine vs third-party parts

Genuine parts (Apple Genuine, Samsung Genuine) cost more but preserve resale value better. Third-party parts can be cheaper but may trigger "unknown part" warnings on iPhone and Samsung, reducing what the next buyer will pay. If a repair is intended to recover resale value, genuine parts are usually the right call.

When a repair won't recover its cost

    • Older phones (4+ years) where working resale value is already low
    • Multi-fault devices — repairing one fault doesn't restore full grading if others remain
    • Mid-range phones with screen-assembly damage
    • Foldables with hinge or inner-display faults
    • Phones with triggered liquid-damage indicators

We won't quote exact repair vs sell figures without seeing the phone — too much depends on the specific damage. Bring it to our St Helens counter or send photos on WhatsApp for an honest indication of which way to go.

    Common questions

Will you repair my phone instead of buying it?

We're a buying counter, not a repair service. We'll give you an honest view on whether repair makes sense, but the repair itself would be a separate transaction with a repair specialist.

Does Apple's official repair count as 'genuine parts'?

Yes — Apple Authorised Service Providers use Apple Genuine parts and the repair is logged against the device. It's the safest route for preserving resale value.

I've already repaired it with a third-party screen. Does that hurt the offer?

It can — non-genuine parts often trigger warnings on iPhone and reduce buyer confidence. Tell us upfront and we'll grade fairly.
