Why Storage Size Affects Phone Resale Value

The same model in two different storage tiers can value hundreds of pounds apart. The reason isn't manufacturing cost — it's what second-hand buyers are actually willing to spend on, and what resellers want to stock.

Manufacturers price storage tiers aggressively at retail. The jump from 128GB to 256GB on an iPhone Pro is around £100, even though the actual NAND cost difference is much smaller. That margin gets baked into the second-hand market — but the resale value of the bigger tier holds up better than the smaller one, because demand is asymmetric.

What the second-hand market actually looks for

Pull up sold listings for any iPhone Pro generation and the same pattern repeats:

    • 64GB and 128GB tiers sell, but slowly, and at noticeably lower prices
    • 256GB is the sweet spot — fastest sale times, strongest demand, most competitive offers
    • 512GB commands a premium because it's the configuration video creators and power users actually want
    • 1TB is rarer in the UK and consistently fetches a meaningful uplift, especially on Pro Max and Ultra models

Why the gap is widening, not closing

Three trends are pulling storage demand upwards:

    • Camera files — ProRes video, 48MP RAW stills and 4K60 footage all chew through storage. A power user can fill 128GB in months.
    • Apps and games — modern AAA mobile games and AR apps routinely sit at 5–10GB each
    • Long ownership — phones are being kept for 3–4 years now, not 2. Buyers shopping the second-hand market plan ahead and often size up rather than replace storage later (which iPhones can't do anyway)

How storage interacts with model tier

Storage matters most on Pro models, foldables and Ultras — devices people buy intentionally and use heavily. On entry-level iPhones and mid-range Galaxies, the storage premium narrows because the buyer profile is different. Someone shopping for an iPhone SE or a Galaxy A is rarely planning to record ProRes.

iPhone vs Samsung — same trend, different shape

On iPhone the storage uplift is steady and predictable across the line-up. On Samsung it's complicated by the fact that older Galaxies had microSD support — a phone that could expand its own storage didn't need a premium tier. Newer Galaxies have dropped that, so the storage premium is now closer to iPhone's pattern. 1TB Ultras in particular are actively sought by resellers.

What this means for your offer

When you message us with a model, the storage size genuinely affects the guide figure — sometimes by more than people expect. Two iPhone 14 Pro Max devices in identical condition can value over £100 apart simply because one is 256GB and the other is 1TB. Always include the storage when asking for a quote.

    Quick tips

    • Find your storage in Settings → General → About → Capacity on iPhone, or Settings → About phone → Storage on Samsung
    • If you're not sure, the model-number sticker on the original box also lists the configuration
    • Higher storage tiers don't make minor faults less of a deduction — they raise the ceiling, not the floor

    Common questions

Is the difference between 128GB and 256GB really that much?

On Pro and Ultra models, yes. The gap on flagship phones can be £80–£150 depending on generation and condition.

Does storage matter on older iPhones?

Less, but it still moves the price. On iPhone 11 and 12 the spread between tiers is narrower than on current Pro models, but 256GB still values above 64GB.

What about phones with expandable microSD?

Galaxies that supported microSD have a flatter storage premium — the slot was effectively free upgrade insurance. Newer SD-less Samsungs follow the iPhone pattern.

Will I get more if I include the original box and packaging?

Slightly. Box and accessories don't change the storage uplift, but they support a complete-set price on newer flagships.
